Pima County Legal Defender’s Office

The Pima County Legal Defender’s Office represents indigent individuals upon court appointment in all felony cases, direct appeal, and Rule 32 post-conviction matters, and extradition hearings. Individuals charged with criminal offenses, which occur within the boundaries of Pima County, may also be assigned to the Pima County Public Defender’s Office or to the Office of Court Appointed Counsel.

Internship Description: Unpaid

Assisting the attorneys and office staff in the day-to-day duties of the law office. Including, but not limited to;

  • Scanning documents
  • Summarizing media (i.e. audio of interviews, photos, surveillance videos, jail calls, etc.)
  • Summarizing medical records, (i.e. treatment dates, diagnoses, etc.)
  • Jail visits with clients (clearance required)
  • Mitigation projects (writing reports to aid in a client’s sentencing. The reports detail childhood trauma, mental health issues, and other sensitive areas)

Purpose of the Internship

The purpose of the internship is to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom in an agency setting, and to develop new skills by being involved in actual cases and projects. You will learn the ins and outs of the criminal justice system, specifically from the side of defense.

Sophomore status or above
