Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)


Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is the primary investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). HSI’s mission is to conduct criminal investigations that protect the United States against terrorist and other criminal organizations who threaten our safety and national security; to combat transnational criminal enterprises who seek to exploit America’s legitimate trade, travel, and financial systems; and to uphold and enforce America’s customs and immigration laws at and beyond our nation’s borders.

Internship Description:  Unpaid 

Agency Familiarization: Understand HSI missions and programmatic areas as well as investigative authority;

  • Financial, Narcotics, Cyber Crimes, Child Exploitation, Human Trafficking/Smuggling and Counter-Proliferation

General Investigations: Learn the application of the criminal justice system as it relates to conducting complex investigations and the use of various investigative techniques and judicial proceedings.

  • Firearms & Tactical Training/Evidentiary procedures

Purpose of the Internship

This HSI Tucson internship will help students develop an understanding of the career as a Special Agent in a federal agency with one of the largest investigative presences in the U.S. and abroad. The intern will also be exposed to and gain experience by assisting and supporting real criminal investigations.

Agency Minimum Qualifications

  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Pass a Background Investigation

Agency Preferred Qualifications

  • Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA
  • Be a Junior or Senior
  • Pursuing or Interested in a career in the Criminal Justice field
