The Power of the Crowd: Understanding the Impact of Modern Protests

Across the globe, there has been a remarkable rise in the use of protest as a tool to voice demands for change. Civil resistance has been used to fight against inequality and corruption, at times seeking to replace leaders or even overthrow regimes. Remarkably, these unarmed and nonviolent civilians are often successful and achieve their political goals, yet the likelihood of success has been declining over time. Protesters face many challenges, from state repression to a need for organization and popular support. In this panel, SGPP Professors Jessica Maves Braithwaite, Daniel Arnon, and Kirssa Cline Ryckman will discuss the use of mass mobilization as a political tool, focusing on their outcomes and consequences. They will examine whether campaigns achieve their goals, considering the role of participants, organizations, and public support. Drawing insights from campaigns globally, they will also consider the potential impact of protests in the contemporary United States.
