Internship Location: Tucson, Arizona (2 positions) & Nogales, Arizona (2 positions). You may apply to one or both locations. Please indicate which office(s) you wish to be considered for in your cover letter.

Internship Hours: Part-Time (8-12 hours per week) (flexible per student's schedule)

Purpose of the Internship: This unpaid internship provides unique opportunities for students who seek to develop their professional skills and explore career paths within HSI and law enforcement. Interns will be exposed to various investigative fields such as:

  • Narcotics Smuggling
  • Child Exploitation & Cyber Crimes
  • Money Laundering & Financial Crimes
  • Weapons Trafficking & Illegal Export of Controlled Technologies
  • Human Smuggling & Trafficking
  • Transnational Gangs & Public Safety Crimes
  • Intellectual Property Rights Crimes
  • Terrorism & National Security

Additionally, interns will participate in investigative and tactical training to include interviewing, surveillance, report/affidavit writing, firearms, defensive/entry tactics, and a mock continuing case scenario.

Internship Description: Unpaid (8-12 hours per week)

1.   Familiarization of Homeland Security Investigations – The student will develop an understanding of a Special Agent career in a federal agency with one of the largest investigative presences in the U.S. and abroad. This will involve learning about HSI’s mission, goals, and priorities as well as its many investigative programmatic areas and authorities.

2.  Application of the Criminal Justice System - The student will be given a firsthand look at conducting criminal investigations and their judicial proceedings. The program will cover various investigative techniques and legal processes.

3. Development of Communication Skills - The program will provide the opportunity to enhance the student’s ability to communicate with others through collaboration on cases and different presentations and assignments. Additionally, the students will participate in mock interviews, briefings, and courtroom testimony. This includes working with personnel from various federal and state/local law enforcement agencies.

4. Understanding of Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCOs) - The student will learn about current threats facing our country and specifically here in Arizona. The student will become aware of the criminal organizations who threaten our safety and national security and of TCOs who seek to exploit America’s legitimate trade, travel, and financial systems.

5.  Career Exploration and Personal Development - The program will allow the student to have a better understanding of career possibilities and the physical and mental requirements of working in law enforcement.

Agency Qualifications (minimum)

  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Enrolled at least part-time in an academic institution
  • 2.5 GPA
  • Pass a background investigation
