Travel Stipends

SGPP students attending the Top Secret: Academic Seminar in Washington, D.C. in May 2013. 

 

SGPP students may apply to receive a travel expense stipends for academic conferences, out-of-state & international internships, study abroad programs, and student exchange programs.

Eligible Expenses 

  • Airfare (Maximum of  $500 for domestic; $1,000 for international) 
  • Conference registration fees (maximum of $500) 

Requirements 

Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for stipends/reimbursements: 

NOTE: STUDENTS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TRAVEL FUNDING TO "TRAVEL WARNING COUNTRIES

  1. Students must be a declared SGPP major (Law, Criminal Justice Studies, Public Management and Policy, or Political Science)
  2. Junior or Senior status (minimum of 60 credits completed) with a 2.25 GPA or higher
  3. Paying SGPP Program fees.
  4. Be accepted into program before applying for stipend/reimbursement 
  5. Individual student awards may not exceed $2500 total over the course of their time in an SGPP major. 
  6. Purpose of travel must be relevant to either a student’s major or earning a degree for their major in the School of Government and Public Policy.
  7. Funding Stipend applications must be submitted AT LEAST 42 days (6 WEEKS) prior to departure (Effective July 1, 2015).

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered for funding. 

  1. Study Abroad or International Internship students must be enrolled in that course for the semester for which they are seeking stipend
  2. Students traveling internationally will be asked to register their trip with the university. Instructions to complete this step will be provided once funding is awarded
  3. Be attending the UA main campus (completing an LOA for program is acceptable) 
  4. Student Travelers are held to the Student Code of Conduct standards while representing the UA at off-campus events/locations.
  • PLEASE NOTE: All student stipends/reimbursements are credited to the students Bursars Account. Deficits on the Bursars account will be satisfied before a refund will be issued to a student. 

How to Apply 

  1. Complete the ONLINE APPLICATION.
    • As part of your application, you will need to upload the following documents: 
      • Résumé 
      • Brief statement answering the following questions (250 words): 
        • How is this program relevant to your major in the School of Government and Public Policy?
        • How will this program help you achieve your future professional interests? 
  2. Once you have completed the online application, submit the following materials to Social Sciences 315-- The SGPP Main Office Hours are 9 am and 4 pm, Monday through Friday (Office closed on UA Holidays and all weekends).
    • Original airfare receipt showing itinerary and proof of purchase- this must include the total payment and the last four digits of the credit card used as payment).
    • Original conference registration receipt showing proof of purchase (if applicable) 
    • Proof of program registration or acceptance (see examples below)
      • Academic Conference: Copy of conference registration, as well as a conference flyer or other information from conference website. 
      • Internships: Copy of completed internship application or letter from internship organization verifying acceptance 
      • Study Abroad: Copy of study abroad course selection sheet (completed by your academic advisor) or copy of letter stating you have been accepted into study abroad program 
      • Student Exchange: Copy of transfer credit pre-approval form (must be signed by academic advisor and registrar) or copy of letter stating you have been accepted into a student exchange program

ALL DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED MUST BE SIGNED AND DATED BY AN SGPP MAIN OFFICE STAFF PERSON TO BE ACCEPTED. SIGNATURE/DATE DOES NOT IMPLY THAT DOCUMENTS ARE ACCURATE- ONLY THAT THEY HAVE BEEN RECEIVED BY THE DEPARTMENT.
