The Tucson Fellowship is a management internship program designed for an MPA or MPP student pursuing a career in local government. The intern will work in the City Manager's Office (CMO) at City Hall during normal business hours, with flexibility to accommodate the intern's class schedule.

Example Duties and Tasks

The Management Intern will work as a member of City staff and work closely with the Deputy City Manager, Assistant City Managers, department heads, and CMO staff on a variety of administrative tasks. The Intern will participate in rotations throughout City departments and gain broad experiences across the organization. Examples of tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Research for special projects and basic data analysis
  • Review of and response to requests and inquiries from City residents and the general public
  • Attendance at special events, as appropriate
  • Participation in meetings of the City Manager's Office
  • Special projects, as assigned

In their final year of the MPA or MPP program, Tucson Fellows enjoy the prestige associated with working as a Management Intern for the City of Tucson.

Compensation is $15/hour for 20 hours/week for 1 year.

This management internship will count as 6 units of credit towards the MPA or MPP degree requirements.

For the 2024-2025 academic year, a graduate tuition waiver of $10,000 ($5,000/semester) will be awarded.

A Graduate Tuition Waiver only covers base tuition.  

Tucson Fellows earn 6 units of internship credit towards their MPA or MPP degree requirements. Three units of PA 593 will be completed in each of the fall and spring semesters.

Application Process

One 2nd-year student will be selected each fall semester as the Tucson Fellow based on a competitive application review process.

  1. All applicants must be in their 2nd year in the MPA or MPP program.
    • Students in the AMP are eligible to apply to the Tucson Fellowship program.
  2. All applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  3. Applicants should possess a strong interest in local government.
