Arizona Fair Share Internships

About Fair Share

Is working for social change the career path for you? Find out this semester by applying for IL Fair Share's Campus Leadership Project, a 12-week "boot camp for change" that will equip you with practical skills and hands-on experience.

As part of your campus leadership team, you’ll gain practical skills and hands-on experience working on a key issue facing our nation: rebuilding the economy. While political leaders in Washington, DC, negotiate the federal budget, you’ll be amplifying our demand for a fair budget that invests in education and job creation – not more crippling cuts to vital services like Head Start.

Campus leaders will be professionally trained in specific skills, such as:

  • Developing strategic grassroots campaigns
  • Volunteer recruitment and leadership development
  • Planning social and media events
  • Using social media to amplify your voice
  •  Getting the media to cover your story

If you're an undergraduate or graduate student who’s thinking of any of these as career paths – community organizing, political campaigns, union organizing, legislative advocacy, government – apply for the Campus Leadership Project today. Women, people of color, LGBT persons, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Internship Positions

Fair Share Coalition Intern

Building a broad-based coalition of advocacy groups, small businesses, and community leaders is a key piece of Fair Share’s work.   Since our campaigns are focused on demonstrating broad public support for certain issues, it is critical that we show that many groups are on our side.  And the bigger our coalition is, the more that we can accomplish.

Responsibilities include:

  • Research to develop a strategic list of potential coalition partners for each of our campaigns
  • Get advocacy groups, local community organizations, and student groups to sign on to our campaign
  • Canvass small business owners to organize the small business community around our issues
  • Attend and participate in strategy meetings with coalition partners

Also, interns are expected to help build Fair Share’s overall program by meeting weekly with the Fair Share organizer to evaluate progress.

Skills required:

Coalition interns must be highly motivated and politically knowledgeable.  They must enjoy working with other people, have good communications skills, and be willing to learn.

Fair Share Media Intern

Media and public relations are key components of Fair Share’s work.  Generating media coverage of our campaign actions is one of the primary ways that we get our message out to the broader public and pressure elected officials to promote economic fairness.  To do this, we not only get media outlets to cover our campaign events but also submit letters-to-the-editor to local newspapers and utilize social media tools to broaden the reach of our campaigns.

Responsibilities include:

  • Help organize news conferences and prepare media materials
  • Reach out to media outlets to pitch them on covering our campaign actions
  • Update our media list on a regular basis
  • Utilize social media tools to get our message out to the broader public and to get more people involved with the campaign.
  • Run letter-to-the-editor writing workshops with volunteers.

Also, interns are expected to help build Fair Share’s overall program by meeting weekly with the Fair Share organizer to evaluate progress.

Skills required:

Media interns must be energetic and creative.  They must have strong communication skills (both verbal and written), enjoy working with people, and have a willingness to learn.  A communications background is a plus.

Fair Share Grassroots Intern

In order for Fair Share to win campaigns, it absolutely critical to identify citizens who are with us on the issue and to mobilize those supporters.  Grassroots coordinators develop and implement a plan to mobilize hundreds/thousands of supporters.  It is an ideal position for students who have good communication skills and want to learn how to manage a big public outreach campaign.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organize petitioning events to demonstrate public support for our campaigns
  • Phone-bank to recruit volunteers to campaign actions
  • Help organize community meetings to get more people involved
  • Train volunteers on important skills such as petitioning and phone-banking

Also, interns are expected to help build Fair Share’s overall program by meeting weekly with the Fair Share organizer to evaluate progress.

Skills required:

Grassroots interns must be highly motivated and enthusiastic.  Interns must enjoy working with other people, have good communications skills, and be willing to learn.  Leadership experience is a plus.
