The Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services is a state agency that advocates for the over 600,000 veterans that reside in the state. Our Mission: To be the catalyst in response to the evolving needs of Arizona’s veterans and their families.

  • Conduct research about HUD/VASH
  • Conduct research about the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF)
  • Experience the passion of counselors that work with the homeless and their impact on prevention of homelessness.
  • Understand the definition of a homeless veteran 
  • Understand the Point in Time count
  • Conduct research with the definition of homeless veterans, on how each of those veterans are housed (process)
  • Understand how single female veterans and single head of household veterans are housed
  • Develop recommendations to ADVS to redesign current process of housing the homeless veteran population that will inform the 5-year veteran homelessness plan

Purpose of the internship

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is seeking graduate or undergraduate students working towards a degree in public policy to help conduct research on veteran homelessness. The Arizona Department of Veterans' Services, through a coordinated effort, implemented a 5- year Veteran Homelessness plan that has now expired. To inform a new plan we are seeking two individuals to research veteran homelessness in respect to the effective use of Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Administration Supportive Housing (HUD/VASH ) and/or the Housing First methods. Although the internship is unpaid, you will gain valuable professional development experience and may be eligible to earn credit towards your degree.

Agency minimum qualifications

2.5 GPA; Junior or Senior; no previous work required; no special knowledge required.

Agency preferred qualifications

Must be able to work in the Phoenix area; must have a commitment to the AZDVS mission of caring and advocating for veterans; must be proactive, have personal integrity and responsibility; experience with computer programs; ability to work well with professionals and the public; must have own computer equipment. Work hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
