President Donald Trump promised dramatic changes to US foreign policy during his campaign. On trade, he signaled a tougher stance, forewarning a dramatic increase in the use of tariffs to achieve strategic and economic goals. He also promised a more transactional stance with its European allies. In Latin America, he has promised a tougher stance on migration, already forcing reluctant allies such as Columbia to accept deportation flights. Will has policy changes achieve his goals? Will they lead to unintended consequences? Will they lead our allies to consider aligning more closely with China?
In this roundtable, the University of Arizona’s Arizona Policy Lab brings together three experts at the School of Government and Public Policy to discuss these questions. Professor Paulette Kurzer will discuss the impact of the Trump Administration’s policy towards Europe. Professor Paul Schuler will assess whether Trump’s policy shifts are likely to benefit or hinder China’s ambitions in East Asia. Finally, Professor Javier Osorio will discuss the impacts of Trump’s foreign policy changes on US influence in Latin America.
