Internship Description:

SU2J is searching for a student to fill the role of intake specialist. The candidate selected for this position will respond to calls from low-income individuals and families facing civil legal issues, including referrals made to SU2J by its 36 partner organizations. The intern selected for this position will serve as the initial point of contact for applicants seeking legal assistance. In addition to responding to calls and connecting with applicants, we anticipate the intern selected will conduct new applicant intake interviews and assist with coordination of legal clinics.

Site Specific Guidelines And Requirements for Legal Intake Specialist Position

After receiving training by SU2J staff, the intake specialist will speak with applicants to determine whether they are financially and asset eligible to receive legal services from SU2J. The intake specialist will also determine if there are legal conflicts of interest and conduct an interview to gather facts about the applicant’s case.

Agency Qualifications (minimum)

Students must possess a passion for social justice and poverty related issues, as well as sensitivity to working with people from diverse backgrounds. Special consideration will be given to students who have a demonstrated commitment to serving low income or disadvantaged communities.

The intern should feel comfortable speaking with potential clients about obtaining civil legal services. Interns are expected to quickly gain a deeper understanding of access to justice issues facing low-income Pima County residents, and how SU2J – partnered with various agencies and the courts – is working to address these challenges.

Obligations to the Intake Intern:
SU2J staff will provide the initial training required to ensure that the intake specialist is able to conduct new applicant intakes and assist with the coordination of legal clinics.
