Description

HSI is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, responsible for investigating transnational crime and threats, specifically those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, travel and finance move. HSI’s mission is to investigate, disrupt and dismantle terrorist, transnational and other criminal organizations that threaten or seek to exploit the customs and immigration laws of the United States.

Deadlines

Internship Description: Unpaid (8-12 hours per week)

Agency Familiarization: Develop an understanding of a Special Agent career in a federal agency with one of the largest investigative presences in the U.S. and abroad. This will involve learning about HSI’s mission, goals, and priorities as well as its many investigative programmatic areas and authorities.

  • Narcotics Smuggling, Child Exploitation & Cyber Crimes, Weapons Trafficking, Human Smuggling & Trafficking, Transnational Gangs, Money Laundering, Terrorism & National Security.

Application of the Criminal Justice System: Involves a firsthand look at conducting criminal investigations and their judicial proceedings. The program will cover various investigative techniques and legal processes.

Additional Areas: Development of communication skills, understanding of transnational criminal organizations, firearms & tactical training, port of entry/border familiarization, and career exploration/personal development.

Purpose of the Internship

This unpaid internship provides unique opportunities for students who seek to develop their professional skills and explore career paths within HSI and law enforcement. Interns will participate in investigative and tactical training to include interviewing, surveillance, and a mock continuing case scenario.

Agency Minimum Qualifications

  • Be a United States Citizen
  • Enrolled at least part-time in an academic institution
  • 2.5 GPA
  • Pass a background investigation
